• Doxa Documentary Film Festival

  Vancouver, BC — Watch documentary movies at several Vancouver venues from May 6 to 15. Check out the Festival’s programme to learn what’s playing and when (or download the PDF booklet).

  The Festival is presented by the Documentary Media Society, a Vancouver based non-profit organization (incorporated in 1998) dedicated to presenting independent and innovative documentaries to Vancouver audiences. The Society exists to educate the public about documentary movies as an art form.

• Submit to VISAFF

  Vancouver, BC — The Vancouver International South Asian Film Festival is still seeking submissions of features, shorts, and documentaries for its 2011 programme.

  The second annual VISAFF is a three-day festival that includes movies, a panel discussion by industry professionals, and an opening reception and closing gala. It’s held in the SFU Woodwards Building (149 West Hastings Street) from July 16 to 17.

  The Festival’s purpose and vision is to “bridge the gap” between South Asian films and mainstream audiences. VISAFF is instrumental in breaking the South Asian stereotype, and expanding North American views on the artists within the culture.

• Getting Location Access

  Location shooting makes your movie larger — as if it actually takes place in the real world. Videomaker magazine has a video introduction to getting access to locations.

  It covers the three types of locations: unlimited (premises you own or public places), limited (private property owned by someone else), and restricted (places requiring several levels of approval before shooting). They briefly go over managing locations, and the releases you’ll need. They repeatedly stress that you should make the owner happy — always good advice.

• 20 Lighting Tutorials

  Better lighting is the fastest, surest way to make your movie look better. FilmmakerIQ posted links to 20 video tutorials on various aspects of lighting. Learn the basics of lighting instruments, colour temperature, and three-point lighting techniques, or how to light an interview or green screen, and of course more.
